Squire Defiant Disc Lock

We don’t really buy into the concept of a good-value, brake-disc lock. Disc locks are not the most expensive motorbike accessory that you’ll ever buy, but if a good disc lock can put somebody off stealing your bike then it’s got to be worth spending a few extra quid. Surely?

 

Right now, the strongest, most attack-resistant disc lock on the market is the Defiant from Squire. It’s not the smallest, it’s certainly not the lightest, and whilst we appreciate the benefits of portability, it’s still small enough to be carried about by anybody. It measures about three inches by three inches, and is an inch thick. It weighs two pounds. Put it in a pannier, a top box or a tank bag. Personally, I wouldn’t carry it about my person, or in a bum bag, because the thought of landing hard on it doesn’t bear thinking about.

 

The important point about the Defiant, of course, is that it’s the best. With its 25 mm, solid, hardened-steel body, it will withstand pretty much any hand-held, angle-grinder attack. The six-dimple, key-operated lock is also going to put it out of reach of all but the most skilled, professional lock picker.

 

Which is why the Defiant has received a ‘Power Cycle’ Diamond safety rating. Frankly, it just doesn’t get better than that.

 

When it comes to protecting your bike, it has to be said that there’s never a 100% guarantee. If a bunch of old boys can tunnel into a safety-deposit-box vault in Hatton Garden, then if somebody really wants your bike they will find a way. But what you can do is make the thief’s job a lot harder, to the point where he’s going to think that there must be easier pickings around the corner.

 

Right now, the Squire Defiant costs £199.99, so it’s not cheap cheap. But you’re going to feel a bit daft if you have your biked nicked because you thought you could save a twenty quid on a cheaper disc lock. If you really, really don’t want your bike to get nicked, this is the one to go for. If you’re not overly bothered about whether it goes missing, knock yourself out; you’ll get one that looks the part on Amazon for a lot less.
